Dr. Bryan Winfred Massey, Sr. was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina in 1960. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Art & Design and a Professor of Art/Sculptor/Designer at the University of Central Arkansas, Conway. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC; his Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. He completed his Doctorate of Education at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock in Higher Education Administration.
We are honored to host Dr. Bryan Winfred Massey, Sr. Summer 2025 as the first Visiting Artist Educator at Kindred Creative Residence + Agro-ForesT.
As a young artist Bryan began his creative work in wood. After traveling to Senegal and Gambia to study the traditional West African carving techniques of his ancestors, he applied the skills and techniques he learned to his stone carving practice. Bryan began his career figuratively, but now works with both the figurative and abstract. His recent combinations of stone and steel have begun to carry him to a higher dimension in his work.
Participants in this workshop will learn to pay attention to the texture, grain, & imperfections in a cherry wood log harvested from the land. Whether you are a new, or seasoned, carver you will have the opportunity to practice with an inexpensive and accessible material to see results more quickly. You will learn to read your material, adjust your tools to the softness, or hardness, of the wood as you expand your creative risk-taking, allow yourself to make mistakes, and practice the techniques used to approach wood carving that are transferable to other reduction carving materials while being more forgiving.
“My work for years has been focused on creating interesting works of art that deal with social, political, cultural and spiritual issues. In my work, I want the viewer to experience the raw emotions that I experienced in the creative process whether it is stone, steel or cast metal."
